Port Enfield

The Enfield Intermodal Terminal also known as Port Enfield has been approved by the NSW Government.  As local residents of Strathfield and the Inner West of Sydney, we are horrified that this environment disaster, consisting of a huge rail/truck terminal operating 24 hours, 7 days per week has been approved in a primarily residential area.

The development is a Intermodal Logistics Centre which is 2.5km long by half a kilometre wide and is located on the eastern side of the former Enfield Marshalling Yards. The proposal involves the movement of containers by rail from Botany to Enfield, where these containers will be loaded onto trucks for distribution within Sydney. Surrounded by residential streets, the centre is to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days per week and will attract up to 120 containers and more than 1000 semi-trailers and B-doubles each day and night. The impact on our community including unacceptable levels of noise, air pollution, traffic congestion, loss of amenity, along with increased risk of very serious road accidents. This site was declared a State significant development. This site is contained within the boundaries of Strathfield Council boundary but the Council is NOT the consent authority for this development. Though this development is contained in Strathfield Municipality, the impact of the development affects many bordering Council areas such as Bankstown and Canterbury.

Our submission opposing this development was lodged in February 2006.  Please note that the Department of Planning did not bother to acknowledge the submission - so much for community consultation!
