Strathfield Events

Walking Tour – Saturday 10 May – 10am to 1pm
A walking tour of Homebush and Strathfield will be held on Saturday 10th May
2008. View some of Strathfield Municipality’s finest heritage properties and
conservation areas along famous tree lined streets, featuring prominent
Victorian mansions and excellent examples of Federation architecture. Commentary
on the social and architectural history will be provided.
The tour meets at 10am at Strathfield Library, corner Abbotsford Road and
Rochester Street, Homebush. This tour features a wide variety of historic
properties such as Victorian style mansions of wealthy merchants of the 1880s
and 1890s and homes of the Federation and Bungalow periods. This tour involves
walking, so please bring walking shoes, hat and sunscreen. The tour may not be
suitable if you have difficulties with walking. Regular stops will be made for
rest and toilet breaks. In the unlikely case of heavy rain, the tour may be
cancelled.

Photographic Exhibition – 5 to 20 April 2008
In the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, Strathfield was one of Sydney’s
most expensive suburbs, known for its large houses and country style estates.
The ‘Great Houses of Strathfield’ exhibition features displays of some of
Strathfield’s finest houses, both past and present.
The display will be held at Strathfield Library, 65-67 Rochester Street Homebush
during normal Library opening hours.
Heritage Conservation Awards Presentation Night – 16 April 2008
Strathfield Council’s Heritage Conservation Awards will be held on Wednesday 16
April 2008 at Strathfield Library. The ceremony commences at 6pm and includes
the serving of refreshments. The Awards provide recognition to local residents
and organisations that have completed a project in 2007 that promote the
conservation of Strathfield's natural, built or cultural heritage. To assist
with catering, please contact Roger Brook at Strathfield Council on 9748 9932 if
you would like to attend.
Lecture – History of the Royal Easter Show – Saturday 1 March 2008
Kylie Rees, Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) archivist, will be presenting a
talk on the history of the RAS and its largest annual event, the Royal Easter
Show. The talk commences at 1pm at Strathfield Library, 65-67 Rochester Street
Homebush. All welcome. Free admission with refreshments included.
