Biographies of residents of Strathfield [P-Z] Frederick PARSONSFrederick William Parsons [1852-1933] served as an Alderman on Strathfield Council from 1890 to 1914 and elected Mayor in 1895-7. Parsons was a real estate agent and auctioneer and was one of the organisers of the petition to NSW Government in September 1884 to incorporate Strathfield Municipality. Captain Albert PEARSE [1857-1951]Managing Director of The Pastoral Review and Grazier’s Record, lived in ‘Roubaix’ 12 Llandilo Avenue, Strathfield. Frederick PETERS Peters established Peters Ice Cream. He was a prominent Freemason and lived at ‘Cheriton’ 18-20 Kingsland Rd Strathfield. He died in 1937. William PIGGOTT [1839-1909]Solicitor and MLA NSW Parliament. Lived at 'Steephurst' Albyn Rd Strathfield. Edward POWELL [1762-1814] Early land grantee. Powell established the Halfway house on Parramatta Rd, Homebush, which is the site of the 'Horse & Jockey' Hotel. Sir George REID Prime Minister of Australia, lived at ‘Mount Royal’ [now Australian Catholic University, Albert Rd Strathfield]. George REIDAlderman of Strathfield Council [Flemington Ward]. Ferninand REUSS Jnr Surveyor and architect. Ferninand Reuss lived at ‘Woodbine’ Broughton Rd Strathfield, which has since been demolished. Thomas ROSE Original land grantee. Archbishop Michael SHEEHANLived at ‘Jurvena’ Broughton Rd [now the Society of St Paul]. Dr George SLYProminent solicitor and founder of legal firm Sly & Russell, lived at ‘Glen Luna’. Sly’s brothers Richard and David were also trained in law. Richard Mears Sly was a Judge and primarily lived in Burwood. David Sly was an educator and started a school ‘Eton College’ in Redmyre Rd. Washington SOULPharmacist, lived at ‘Agincourt’ Albert Rd [now Jesmond Nursing Home]. Built Lodge Washington Soul on the rear of his property on Beresford Rd in 1922. Charles SLATYER [c.1919]Architect. Slatyer built and lived at ‘Carminya’ 25 Homebush Rd Strathfield until his death in 1919. Was partner in the architectural firms of 'Slatyer and Ellis' and 'Slayter & Cosh'. Slatyer married Elsie Todman, daughter of tobacco merchant George Todman and designed many of the properties owned by the Todman family in Strathfield including 'Virginia' and 'Inglethorpe' Redmyre Road. Another prominent historical building designed by Slatyer is 'Glen Luna' 2-4 Carrington Avenue Strathfield, which was designed by Slatyer & Ellis and remodelled later by Slatyer & Cosh. Slatyer was elected President of the Institute of Architects [NSW Branch] in 1919. Other members of Slatyer's family lived in Strathfield including his brother Hampton Slatyer, an Alderman of Strathfield Council and sister Annie, who conducted the 'Ridgemont' School in Broughton Rd Homebush. James Douglas STEWART [1869-1955] Professor of Veterinary Science lived at ‘Quisiana’ 81 Homebush Rd Strathfield. Sir John STEPHENS First NSW Supreme Court Judge, lived & died at ‘Clareville’ near Cook’s River [now Belfield]. Don TALBOTAustralian Swimming Coach, lived in Abbotsford Rd Homebush. Samuel TERRY [1776-1838]Owner of the Redmire Estate, on which most of Strathfield is built. Father John Joseph THERRY [1790-1864]Early land grantee of area now known as St Ann’s Village. George Arthur THOMPSON [1854-1925]Stockbroker and Alderman of first Strathfield Council in 1885. Built and lived at ‘Steephurst’ Albyn Rd, which was the site of the first meeting of Strathfield Council. Son of Thomas James Thompson, grandson of David Jones. Thompson married Sophie Mate and managed his father-in-law's store, T H Mate & Co, Albury. Moving later to Albury, he was elected twice as Mayor. James THOMPSONHorsebreeder of ‘Widden Stud’ Hunter Valley. Thompson lived at ‘Glenfarne’ and ‘Chepstowe’ in Albert Rd. Thomas J THOMPSON [1830-1917]Stockbroker who established T J Thompson & Sons, lived at ‘Malvern’ The Boulevarde Strathfield, which adjoined ‘Llandilo’. 'Malvern' was demolished c.1918 and Malvern Crescent stands in it's place. Thompson married Jane Jones, daughter of David Jones. Thompson was the brother-in-law of Sir Phillip Sydney Jones. Samuel THOMPSON [1821-1910]Stockbroker and brother of TJ Thompson. In 1880, he commenced business as an auctioneer. Thompson was elected a member of the first Woollahra Council in 1860. He then moved to Strathfield and built ‘Rothsay’ Abbotsford Rd. Thompson was staunch Congregationalist and was first Superintendent of the Congregationalist Sunday School in Point Piper Road [now Jersey Rd] in 1858. George TODMANTobacco merchant and philanthropist. Born in London, he entered into partnership with Wilheim von der Heyde as tobacco merchants. After death of Heyde in 1896, Todman became managing director of W D & H O Wills. He later became a director of the British-American Tobacco Coy. Todman was a great philanthropist and supported the building of the Homebush-Strathfield Congregational Church and built a wing at the Western Suburbs Cottage in memory of his daughter Mildred. George Todman lived at ‘Milroy’ in Albert Rd, which has been demolished and Strathfield Girls High stands in its' place. Todman Place and Todman Reserve Strathfield and Todman Avenue Kensington are named for George Todman. James TOOHEY [1850-1895]Brewer and member of NSW Parliament, lived at ‘Torrington’, Torrington Rd Strathfield. Ernest TRIGGHead of Meadowbank Manufacturing Coy. Rolling Stock manufacturers lived in Victoria St Strathfield. James UNDERWOOD [1776?-1844]Early land grantee Henry UTHERSon of Reuben Uther. Original petitioner to incorporate Strathfield in 1884. Lived at ‘Malborough’ Burlington Rd. Died 1937. Donald VERNONTraffic Manager NSW Railways, lived at ‘Parkstone’ and later ‘Clewer’ Albert Rd. John VERNONAuditor-General of NSW, lived at ‘Springfield’ Redmyre Rd [now demolished]. VICKERY FAMILYChildren of Hon. Ebenezer Vickery MLC settled in Strathfield from c.1906: philatelist Amy Vickery at ‘Lauriston’, Joseph Vickery at ‘Strathfield’, George Begg Vickery at ‘Inveresk’ and Elizabeth [Vickery] Newman at ‘Tiptree. Amy VICKERYDaughter of Ebenezer Vickery. Built 'Lauriston' in 1907 [now Santa Maria Del Monte]. George Begg VICKERYLived at 'Inveresk' Coventry Rd. Inveresk Park was established from the subdivision of this property c.1938. Joseph VICKERYLived at the house 'Strathfield'. Joyce VICKERY [1908-1979]daughter of George Begg Vickery of 'Inveresk' Coventry Rd Strathfield. Vickery was prominent plant taxonomist. James VICKERY [1902-1997]Vickery was Chief of the CSIRO Division of Food Preservation 1940-67. He had originally joined the CSIRO Section of Food Preservation and Transport in 1931 as Officer-in-Charge. In 1929 he was sent as biologist on a scientific survey party sent from England at the request of the New Zealand Government to examine and report on certain aspects of the export lamb trade. Frederick
Wallis served on Strathfield Council from 1917 to 1929. He was elected as Mayor in 1923 and 1924. Wallis Avenue and Wallis Reserve at Strathfield
are named for him. Received land grant in 1808 in current day Strathfield. This grant was later known as the Redmire Estate. |
