Biographies of residents of Strathfield [L-N] Charles Carey LANCE [1859-1934] Engineer and businessman. Pioneered dairy manufacture in Victoria, general manager of NSW Creamery Butter Co. 1894, Fresh Food & Ice Co. 1901, Commission Agent for NSW in London 1902-06; commissioner of Sydney Harbour Trust 1907 and President 1913. Lived at 'Hillcrest' Woodward Avenue, ‘Steephurst’ Albyn Rd and 'High Lodge' The Boulevarde Strathfield. Sylvia LANCE Sylvia was the daughter of Charles Carey Lance and renowned Tennis Champion. She won the Australian Women's Open in 1924. Ernest LAURENCESolicitor and Mayor of Strathfield. Laurence lived at 'Dagworth' and later built 'Bellevue' Victoria St Strathfield. Arthur LOWNDES Deputy Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, lived in Redmyre Rd. Nigel Borland LOVE [1892-1979] Love spent his youth at ‘Montesca’ Beresford Rd Strathfield and later lived in South Street Strathfield. n 1919 and H.E. Broadsmith established a company called Australian Aircraft and Engineering Company (AAEC), Australia's first aircraft manufacturing industry, with as managing director. They produced six AVRO 504 K training biplanes for the R.A.A.F. and seven for civilian customers before going into voluntary liquidation in 1923 [Information from Bright Sparcs biographical entry]. Love then joined flour millers Edwin Davey & Co and later established N B Love Industries at Enfield [now Weston Milling]. He married Phyllis Eloise Davey, daughter of George Davey, a one-time Mayor of Strathfield. Arthur Royce LYSAGHT Wire manufacturer lived at ‘Springfort’ Redmyre Rd Strathfield. James MACAULAYPoet, lived in The Crescent Homebush. William McCLELLANDSilk merchant, draper and costumier of city firm 'W H McClelland'. McClelland served as an Alderman on Strathfield Council. James MCGIRR Premier of NSW, lived at ‘Inglethorpe’ Churchill Avenue. Sir Edward MCTIERNAN Barrister, NSW and Commonwealth Parliamentarian and Judge of the High Court, lived at ‘Allerton’ Churchill Avenue. MLA for Western Suburbs 1920-27; Minister for Justice April-Dec 1920; Attorney-General 1920-22 & 1925-27. MHR for Parkes 1919-30 [resigned]. Judge of the High Court 1930-76. KBE 1951. Joseph Henry MAIDEN [1859-1925]Director of Royal Botanic Gardens 1896-1924 lived in The Crescent Homebush. In 1880 Maiden became the Curator of the new Technological Museum in Sydney and in 1896 Director of the Botanic Gardens and NSW Government Botanist. He wrote several major books on Australian botany and founded the National Herbarium, Sydney in 1901. James Sandry MATTHEWS Town Clerk of Strathfield Municipal Council [1938-1966]. Matthews Park Greenacre is named after him. Marlene MATTHEWSOlympic athlete lived in Strathfield. Marlene Crescent Chullora is named for her. Dr Arthur Edward MILLS [1865-1940] Physician with Prince Alfred Hospital and Professor of Principles and Practices of Medicine at Sydney lived at ‘Brunyarra’ [now part of Santa Maria Del Monte]. Charles John MUDDLE NSW Register lived at ‘Fairholm’ Cotswold Rd Strathfield. William NEWMAN Shoe manufacturer and partner of David Jones & Co. Lived at ‘Chepstowe’ Albert Rd. Arthur Ross NOTT Real Estate Agent. Son of Randolph Nott. Married the daughter of Edward Lloyd Jones. Chairman of Strathfield Recreation Club. Lived at ‘Bickley’ Albyn Rd [now demolished]. Randolph NOTT Financier and owner of 'Silwood' The Boulevarde [since demolished]. Randolph Nott was born in London in 1822 and came to Australia as a young man. He married in Sydney in 1847 the oldest daughter of the Rev. Dr. Ross, one of the ministers of the Pitt St Congregational Church. Of a family of ten children seven survived him - Randolph Nott estate agent; Arthur Ross Nott, of David Jones & Co; Philip Sydney Nott, of Fisher and Nott, surveyors; J E V Nott, of Thomspon and Nott, solicitors and Ernest Nott, of Nelson & Col, publishers, New York.In his early career, he worked as an architect and built some of the finest residences in Edgecliff Rd Woollahra. Afterwards, he became associated with building societies, and took and active part in the operations of the Permanent Mutual Benefit Building Society. Nott represented Tenterfield in the Legislative Assembly in New South Wales Parliament from June 1859-November 1860. Nott was an active member of the Congregational Church and held the position of honorary secretary to the Congregational Union for 20 years. He died in 1906.
